Method

Two trenches measuring 2.00 x 1.00m in plan were excavated (Trenches 1 and 2; Fig 3). These were located with the aid of Peter Brocklesby of the development architects, P J W Associates, and were placed to coincide with the line of foundation trenches for the proposed building. The first trench was on higher ground to the north of the west end of the church. Trench 2 was on lower ground to the north-west. This lay on the line of a slope down in the churchyard. This slope was steep and gave a drop in ground level of approximately 2.00m or more, to the east and south-east of the church, but was less severe in the area of the trench. This slope was apparently on the line of the old west boundary of the churchyard which had been extended to the west sometime around the end of the First World War (Canon Ray Adams pers comm). The trenches were excavated by hand and recorded according to standard Archaeology Section practice (Archaeology Section Recording System 1988 as amended).
